2 individuals lost their lives, while 35 others were injured in a reaction that involved the release of hydrogen sulfide at a PEMEX facility in Texas platform in Deer Park the officials said on Thursday.

Officials said they were unable to enter the affected unit to determine the full of injuries, however at least one individual was airlifted from the scene by Life Flight helicopter.

In Deer Park, the Mayor Jerry Mouton informed the citizens that there wasn’t a chemical leakage nearby since hydrogen sulfide seemed to be released in the open area.

While speaking to the public, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez mentioned that while the scene is still unfolding and seems still ongoing it is not directed at the external community.

In a statement to ABC News Thursday, PEMEX Deer Park said the gas release was reported at one of its operating units at 4:40 p.m. CDT.

The facility stated that personnel from the Channel Industrial Mutual Aid (CIMA) and Harris County Emergency Management teams and other governmental organizations are onboard and attending to the event.

Which officials are aghast at the situation that has seen State Highway 225 closed for now, according to the facility.

The flaring is noticeable to some members of the community while we are safely managing the situation, the facility explained in the statement. “Our air quality check is normal and no off-site effects are being seen.”

In a statement aired by X some of the officials from the city of Pasadena, Texas said that the chemical let off by the plant was hydrogen sulfide.

The PEMEX facility is an oil treatment plant which takes crude oil feedstock and refines it into gasoline, aviation fuel, diesel and ship fuel from crude oil feedstock from several oil exporting countries.
